2017 Was TateOil’s 45th birthday, a company which has grown to become a national distributor of fuels and one of Yorkshire’s top 250 companies.
Under the watchful guidance of founder George Tate, Tate Fuel Oils started life in Otley, West Yorkshire, in September 1972, as an off-shoot of the family engineering business. Already servicing the engineering needs of the regions farmers, George Tate saw an opportunity to supply their regular customers with the fuel and lubricants they also required.
Forty five years on, TateOil are proud to have sites in 6 locations across the North of England, including DRIVEcard, a thriving fuelcard division in Southport, and over 600 local supply locations nationally; it has almost 100 employees, turnover is approaching 100 million litres and it is still operated from our original head office, in Otley. The Tate Group of companies have operated six service stations and also include George Tate & Son engineers and Tate Medical Engineering, which provides specialist coatings to orthopaedic implant manufacturers, across the globe.
Very much a family affair, George and son, Andrew, have nurtured the company and watched its growth with a keen eye. “We try to maintain the family values that the company started with”, commented George. “We have only ever expanded the business when we have been able to guarantee that our service quality and reputation will be maintained. We would never compromise our values for the sake of expansion, they are as important to us now as the day we started.” he added.
Sales and Commercial Director James Ferguson joined the company in 2010 and has overseen much of its growth outside of the Yorkshire area. “The opening of depots in Immingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham have each marked an exciting point in the company’s history. Forty years ago, a radius of 10 miles took us to Bradford, Harrogate, Leeds, the foothills of the Dales and every town and village in between” Adds George, “That area seemed enormous then. Nowadays, we deliver Red Diesel/Gas Oil, Derv, petrol, heating oil and a full range of fuel additives and lubricants nationally.”
The company roots can be traced back to its origins as a Blacksmiths and whitesmith, in 1878. George Tate & Son have had premises in Otley throughout its history, including Crow Lane, where George’s father, also George, operated an engineering company and where George Jnr served his apprenticeship.
“We’re proud of our origins and our family heritage” says George. “As much as the friendly, courteous and professional service we offer to our clients and believe that it is second to none.”
