Established in 1972, George Tate launched Tate Oil as an extension to his family engineering business, George Tate & Son Engineers. With an existing network of loyal agricultural customers, George took the opportunity to become one of the first family-run fuel suppliers in the area – and 50 years’ later, Tate Oil remains the same independent, family-run business today!
Specialising in fuel for agricultural, commercial and domestic use, Tate Oil delivers over 100 million litres of fuel every year, and has successfully maintained its strong principles of being an honest, hardworking team with loyalty at the core of our company values. We work hard to ensure our customers receive the same excellent customer service as they did nearly 50 years ago!
Tate Oil work with multiple strategically placed depots across the UK, including Immingham, Otley, and Kingsbury, as well as our extensive network of trusted third-party suppliers. We strive to ensure all orders are delivered quickly and efficiently, with cost-effective payment plans available for our domestic customers, and generous credit accounts for agricultural and commercial use.
We’ve carefully grown our business over the past 50 years, which now includes subdivisions such as Tate Heat, Tate Leasing, DriveCard, Tate Medical and George Tate & Son Engineers. Very much still a family affair, George Tate and son, Andrew, have nurtured the company and watched its growth with a keen eye.

Sales Director, Ian Davies, joined Tate Oil in 2018, and works closely with George & Andrew to ensure high standards are still being kept.
“It’s a really interesting time to work in the oil industry: as fuel suppliers, it’s important to keep an eye on the future of energy, so we can help our customers with anything they need – such as renewable energy. The desire for cleaner fuel is already evident, with the push of HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and renewable energy installations, and we’re proud to be a part of this green energy transition. It’s a truly exciting movement in the fuel industry, and we can’t wait to see how the business develops over the next 10 years!”
The company roots can be traced back to its origins as a blacksmiths in 1878: George Tate & Son have had premises in Otley throughout its history, including Crow Lane, where George’s father operated an engineering company, which still thrives today.
