Benefits of Switching to Heating Oil This Winter

For those not served by the the UK’s gas infrastructure, Heating Oil is a must-have.

Per the 2021 census, around 3.8 Million properties in the UK use alternative fuel sources such as heating oil, wood, solid fuel or other renewables.

At Tate Oil, we supply domestic heating oil to customers across the UK as well as commercial properties, serving rural areas and keeping people warm in winter. So, what are the benefits of switching to heating oil?

Read on for more benefits of switching to heating oil.

Understanding Heating Oil

We supply a number of different types of oil, including White Diesel, Red Diesel, domestic heating oil and kerosene.

Economic Advantages of Heating Oil

Cost-Effectiveness: Lower Initial Setup Costs

For any property, central heating is a necessity. Some older buildings or ones with particular restrictions (e.g. listed status) cannot be fitted with gas central heating, not to mention the cost of bringing gas onsite can be prohibitive for many homeowners. Heating Oil Tanks are simple to install, mobile, and can be refilled as regularly or as rarely as you choose. Our Domestic Tanks range have a capacity between 2,500 litres up to 80,000 litres. Pricing: Insulating Against Market Fluctuations

Whilst other fuel types such as electric and natural gas are charged per KWh with an additional standing order, with heating oil you have greater control over how much energy you use. Whilst heating oil prices do fluctuate, filling your tank whilst the price is lower can help through the winter months when demand is likely to go up.

Heating Oil itself is a cost effective and efficient fuel source, generating more energy per therm than natural gas or propane, and is wildly more effective than electric boilers. An oil boiler also lasts longer than a gas boiler – you can get up to 30 years of longevity from an oil boiler if it’s looked after and maintained properly.

Reliability and Supply Security

Performance and Efficiency

High Energy Output: Quick Heating Capabilities

We’ve already covered that heating oil burns efficiently, but just how much heating oil is needed to heat a home? Radiators are sometimes rated in BTUs (British Thermal Units), the same unit for different fuel types.

How efficient is Heating Oil?

Heating oil, or more specifically kerosene generates 129,500 BTU per gallon. Compare that to natural gas, which produces only 166 BTU.

Safety Considerations

Still got reservations? Let’s discuss safety.

Simply put, heating oil doesn’t ignite in the same way as gas does – making it safer for your home all year round. To compare it to another type of oil – petrol (gasoline) has a subzero flashpoint, meaning that if you introduce a flame to it, it will burn quickly. The same cannot be said about heating oil, which requires a far higher temperature to ignite, in the region of 50ºC. This makes it safer to store, and safer to use.

Convenience and Flexibility

Versatile Application: Heating Oil for Various Home Sizes

Because heating oil tanks vary in size, home owners of all types of property can install a new tank with very little impact to their home. Whereas adding gas to a property can include landscaping and underground pipework, a heating oil tank sits outside a home and can be disguised in gardens fairly easily. Luckily, your radiators don’t care what type of boiler heats the water, so integrating heating oil into your existing system is simple.

Energy Independence

When it comes to energy independence, heating oil trumps gas hands down. Whereas gas requires you to be connected to the grid 24/7, along with the huge infrastructure that it requires, pay excessive standing charges and be at the mercy of multinationals, heating oil allows homeowners and businesses alike to take control of their home heating systems.
